Sustainable Living in Sunshine Beach

Old worldly charm meets modern appeal seamlessly at this sustainably refurbished Sunshine Beach habitat. It's hard to believe that a rundown beach shack once stood on this 565sqm duplex allotment, and perhaps some thought it was too much work to breathe new life into it. It's not just a feat in modern architecture, but more how contemporary design meets with recycled timbers, including doors, casement windows and VJ panelling, to create a space that exudes sophistication and pays homage to its history.

Fittings from disused houses were sourced locally from Pomona, Yandina and as far north as Rockhampton, with some pieces coming from Brisbane second hand auctions. Timber panels previously used on walls have been sanded back to create a lime washed appearance and resealed to use as flooring in the sun drenched lounge, and as cabinetry in the kitchen.

A dynamic polished concrete runs throughout all other floor areas of the home, a prime example of how well the new and old work together in this space. Again this modern design harmonises in the kitchen, with concrete bench tops and quality stainless steel appliances, including a five-burner gas cook top working in with the eclectic timber panels of the range hood.

Entry to the home is via a pleasant and immaculately presented north-facing garden and into the original home, where you'll find the kitchen, lounge, dining, first bedroom, main bathroom and sitting room. While much of the materials were sourced from other old homes, the retro vanity featuring in the main bathroom is an original part of this house, and proudly sits as part of the modern finishings in this wet area.An understated laundry, with quirky black and white checked tiles, provides a thorough fair to the new extension, where you'll find the home office (or fourth bedroom) second bedroom, formal lounge and raised master suite.

French doors open to a beautifully lit alfresco dining area, laying between the formal lounge and the kitchen, with a servery window providing easy access for entertaining. An automatic gas fireplace features in the formal lounge, which together with the exposed brick wall create a warming ambiance. From here, a few steps lead up to the luxury master retreat, which has its own walk-in robe and elegantly finished ensuite, featuring twin vanities set in polished concrete and a subtle green mosaic tiled open shower. Given everything you need is at your fingertips, you could almost throw away the keys and live life on foot, with Sunshine Beach village and the ocean just a short stroll.
